Ingredients

4 slices of thick-cut brioche or challah bread

2 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon sugar

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

¼ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (for serving)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the diced apples and sauté for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften. Stir in the lemon juice, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook for an additional 3-5 minutes until the apples are tender and the mixture is syrupy. Set aside.

Make the French Toast Batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, sugar, and ground cinnamon until well combined.

Dip the Bread: Dip each slice of brioche or challah into the egg mixture, allowing each side to soak for a few seconds. Let the excess batter drip off.

Cook the French Toast: In the same skillet used for the apples, add 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the soaked bread slices in a single layer. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and cooked through.

Combine with Apple Filling: Once all slices are cooked, arrange them in the skillet. Spoon the apple filling evenly over the top. If desired, sprinkle with chopped walnuts for added crunch.

Finishing Touches: Cover the skillet with a lid for 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the bottom to caramelize slightly.

Serve: Remove from heat and serve immediately. Top with dollops of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and dust with powdered sugar for an added touch of sweetness.
