Before diving into the recipe, it’s essential to understand what puff pastry is and why it plays such a crucial role in creating the distinct texture of these twists. Puff pastry is a multi-layered pastry made from a simple mixture of flour, water, salt, and butter. The magic happens during the rolling and folding process, which creates numerous layers of dough and butter. When baked, the water in the dough turns to steam, causing the layers to puff up and separate, resulting in a light and flaky texture.

Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if frozen)

1 cup sliced Swiss cheese

1 cup diced cooked ham (preferably honey-baked for extra sweetness)

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon dried thyme (or your herb of choice)

Salt and pepper, to taste

Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Cut the pastry into strips measuring approximately 1 inch by 4 inches.

Mix the filling: In a bowl, combine diced ham, Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, dried thyme, and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Assemble the twists: Place a spoonful of the ham and cheese mixture on one end of each pastry strip. Fold the other end over the filling to create a pocket, then twist the pastry strip a few times to form a spiral shape.

Egg wash: Brush the tops of the twists with the beaten egg to give them a beautiful golden color. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds on top for added texture.

Bake: Arrange the twists on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.

Cool and serve: Once baked, allow the puff pastry twists to cool slightly on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes. Serve warm, and enjoy!
