Ingredients

4 hoagie rolls, sliced lengthwise

1 lb Italian sausage (sweet or hot, based on preference), casings removed

1 large green bell pepper, sliced

1 large red bell pepper, sliced

1 large onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained

1 cup marinara sauce

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Olive oil, for sautéing

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Preheat oven: Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add a drizzle of olive oil. Once hot, add the crumbled Italian sausage. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Use a spoon to break up the sausage as it cooks.

Sauté vegetables: Add the sliced green and red bell peppers, onion, and minced garlic to the skillet with the sausage. Sauté for an additional 5-6 minutes until the veggies are softened. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Remove from heat.

Mix in sauces: Stir the drained diced tomatoes and marinara sauce into the sausage and pepper mixture until well combined.

Prepare the hoagies: Arrange the sliced hoagie rolls in a large baking dish. Spoon the sausage and pepper mixture evenly into each of the hoagie rolls.

Add cheese: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan on top of the filled hoagie rolls.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.

Enjoy: Serve hot and enjoy your delicious Sausage and Pepper Hoagie Bake!
