Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 large egg

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Oil, for frying

For the Maple Glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons pure maple syrup

1-2 tablespoons milk (or as needed for consistency)

A pinch of salt

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract until fully combined.

Combine Ingredients: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. The mixture should be slightly lumpy but still coherent. Avoid overmixing.

Chill the Dough: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to allow the dough to firm up slightly, making it easier to handle.

Heat the Oil: In a deep frying pan or pot, pour enough oil to reach a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil; it should bubble and rise to the surface.

Shape the Donut Holes: Use a small cookie scoop or your hands to form small, round balls of dough, about 1 tablespoon in size. Make sure to handle the dough gently.

Fry the Donut Holes: Carefully drop 4-5 dough balls into the hot oil at a time, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes, turning them occasionally until they are golden brown on all sides. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Make the Maple Glaze: In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, and pinch of salt. Slowly add the milk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired glaze consistency—smooth yet thick enough to coat.

Glaze the Donut Holes: While the donut holes are still warm, dip them into the maple glaze, allowing the excess to drip off. Place them on a wire rack to set, repeating until all donut holes are glazed.

Serve & Enjoy: Once the glaze has set, arrange the donut holes on a serving plate. Enjoy warm or at room temperature!
