Garlic bread, as we know it today, has its roots deeply embedded in Italian cuisine. The concept of infusing bread with garlic and butter can be traced back to ancient times, where the Mediterranean diet celebrated the use of fresh herbs, garlic, and olive oil. Although the exact origins are hard to pin down, garlic bread is believed to have evolved from "bruschetta," an Italian appetizer that features grilled bread topped with a mixture of garlic, tomatoes, and basil.

Ingredients

4 large round sourdough bread rolls

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

6 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Optional: Marinara sauce or creamy soup for filling

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare the Bread Rolls: Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the top off each sourdough bread roll to create a bowl shape. Gently scoop out the insides of the rolls, being careful not to break the bread shell. Reserve the scooped-out bread for future use, such as croutons or breadcrumbs.

Make the Garlic Butter: In a mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, fresh parsley, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are nicely blended.

Brush the Bowls: Using a pastry brush, generously coat the insides of each bread bowl with the garlic butter mixture. Ensure you get the mixture into every crevice for maximum flavor.

Add Cheese: Sprinkle an even layer of shredded mozzarella cheese inside each bread bowl, allowing a bit of the cheese to rest on top.

Bake: Place the prepared bread bowls on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the bread is golden brown.

Fill and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Fill each garlic bread bowl with marinara sauce, creamy soup, or simply enjoy as is. Serve warm, garnished with additional parsley if desired.
