Ingredients

14 oz firm tofu, pressed and cut into bite-sized cubes

½ cup cornstarch

1½ cups panko breadcrumbs

¼ cup sesame seeds

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

½ cup soy sauce (for dipping)

2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional for a sweet touch)

Vegetable oil for frying

Fresh chopped green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: Drain the tofu and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel. Place a heavy object on top to press out excess moisture for about 20 minutes. Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Set Up the Breading Station: In one shallow bowl, place the cornstarch. In a second shallow bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, sesame seeds, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

Coat the Tofu: Dredge each tofu cube in the cornstarch, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the panko mixture, pressing gently to ensure the breadcrumbs adhere well. Repeat until all tofu nuggets are coated.

Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat about ½ inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches around 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping in a small piece of bread; if it sizzles, it’s ready.

Fry the Nuggets: Carefully place the tofu nuggets into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry in batches for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Prepare the Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, mix soy sauce with honey or maple syrup for a sweet and savory dipping sauce. Adjust the sweetness to your taste.

Serve: Arrange the tofu nuggets on a serving platter, sprinkle with chopped green onions if desired, and serve with the dipping sauce on the side.
