Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb ground turkey

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 large egg

1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried parsley)

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for heat)

For the Marinara Sauce:

2 cups crushed tomatoes (canned or fresh)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 clove garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon sugar (to balance acidity)

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

    Prepare the Turkey Meatball Mixture:

      - In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, chopped onion, egg, parsley, oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).

        - Mix with your hands or a spatula until fully combined, but do not over-mix.

          Shape the Meatballs:

            - Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs about the size of a golf ball (approximately 1-1.5 inches in diameter) and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

              Bake the Meatballs:

                - Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until they are cooked through and have a nice golden-brown exterior.

                  Make the Marinara Sauce:

                    - While the meatballs are baking, heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 1 minute).

                      - Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, sugar, and season with salt and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for about 10-15 minutes to let the flavors meld.

                        Combine & Serve:

                          - Remove the meatballs from the oven and add them to the marinara sauce, gently stirring to coat the meatballs. Let them simmer together for another 5 minutes.

                            - Serve warm, garnished with fresh basil leaves if desired. These are perfect with spaghetti or served on their own with crusty bread!
