Ingredients

1 loaf of crusty French bread (about 12 cups, cubed)

8 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tbsp pure vanilla extract

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (plus extra for drizzling)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed French bread and chopped nuts (if using). Spread the mixture evenly into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Make the Custard Mixture: In another mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring that all pieces are submerged. Gently press down the bread with a spatula or your hands to help the custard soak in.

Overnight Option: For best results, cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. If you’re short on time, let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before baking.

Preheat the Oven: When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake: Remove the cover and bake the casserole for about 45-55 minutes or until the top is golden brown and slightly puffed. If it’s browning too quickly, cover it lightly with aluminum foil.

Maple Drizzle: While the casserole is baking, prepare the maple drizzle. In a small saucepan, heat the maple syrup over low heat until warm. If desired, whisk in a little heavy cream for a richer flavor.

Serve: Once the casserole is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Dust with powdered sugar if desired, slice into squares, and drizzle with warm maple syrup.

Enjoy: Serve warm with additional syrup and fresh fruit on the side.
